Moringa seed oil – one of the unsung heroes of skincare

Moringa flowers for moringa seed oil

Moringa flowers

Moringa seed oil is an unsung hero because it cleanses whilst it moisturises – quite an unusual combination, to which I attribute the non-clogging nature of my blend of face oil. It has powerful antioxidant, antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which combined with its high (over 70%) natural oleic acid content means it gets deep into the skin to take action (the higher the oleic acid, the more penetrative the oil).

Superfood in skincare

This isn’t a modern trend – the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians used Moringa seed oil in perfume and on their skin. The Moringa tree is “considered to be the most nutrient-rich plant on earth” 1. I first wrote about using it as a supplement in 2015, which was also around the time I started using it in my blend of face oil. I still have a tub of Moringa leaf powder in my fridge, which I add to smoothies when I am feeling tired or run down. There are so many health benefits to taking it, and not just for healthy skin and hair – its leaves have been used to aid digestion, improve immunity, reduce fatigue and tiredness, and as an adaptogen in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, helping the body to deal with stress.

The oil is extracted from the mature Moringa seeds, creating a nourishing oil with vitamins A, C, and E, which work together to promote healthy skin, protected from ageing oxidative stress.

Skin suitability

A natural moisturiser, its antiseptic and antibacterial properties make it ideal for those with dry skin that is prone to spots. Fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks and enlarged pores are all said to benefit from this oil, without leaving skin feeling greasy.

The oil in my blend is cold pressed from mature Moringa seeds from trees grown in Africa. It is 100% pure, vegan, and free from parabens and synthetic oils.
