Back in our post, Should You Cleanse Your Face In The Morning? we discussed the concept of not cleansing during your morning skincare routine. While some think that by cleansing in the morning we are removing an essential level of protection which comes from natural oils and dead skin cells, we believe that if you use the best products for your skin type and pay attention to what your skin is telling you, cleansing in the morning can enable you to support skin processes rather than disrupting or preventing them. To follow on from our original post, we wanted to dive deeper into the benefits of cleansing your skin in the morning…
WHY CLEANSE YOUR SKIN IN THE MORNING
Perhaps the most important reason to cleanse your skin when you get up is that overnight, dirt and oil build up as our hair, hands, pillowcases and duvets come into contact with our skin. Many of us jump straight into our application routines, unaware that by adding straight to our skin, we are transferring dead skin cells and bacteria onto our brushes/fingertips, spreading this across our face/neck and ultimately clogging pores which can lead to breakouts. By incorporating a cleanser into your routine first thing, unwanted particles and dry skin will be thoroughly cleansed away and you’ll be left with skin that feels fresh, ready to absorb the morning’s moisturiser and prepared for any makeup you plan to apply. Furthermore, your skin will be deeply nourished, products for any skin concerns can work effectively and bases like a foundation sit noticeably better.
WHAT ABOUT SKIN BEING MORE EXPOSED TO ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS?
One of the biggest concerns coming from the no-cleanse brigade is around the exposure to environmental toxins and harsh weather conditions as a result of cleansing before leaving the house. However, we’ve found that skin is saved from pollution as morning cleansing products commonly contain SPF and other antioxidant ingredients. For example, Aurelia’s Miracle Cleanser (as included in our list of Best Natural Makeup Removers and Face Cleansers) is rich in vitamins A, C and E which protects from free radicals and supports the skin’s barrier while it cleanses. Any SPF we apply additionally will also be able to work more efficiently and better block UVA/UVB rays by not having dirt, oil and dead cells lingering on the skin.
THERE IS A WELLBEING ASPECT TO YOUR MORNING SKINCARE ROUTINE
It isn’t just the skin that benefits from a thorough cleanse in the AM; there are many wellbeing positives which can come from it too. For us, taking a few moments of mindfulness as we cleanse has become a morning ritual which doesn’t only help us to wake up but it means we start the day focusing on ourselves. By doing this, we ensure we have energy available for others throughout the day. As the saying goes, “you can’t pour from an empty cup”, meaning put yourself first so you can show up for others.
By cleansing your skin in the morning, you can also identify if you need to increase hydration levels, minimise caffeine levels or get more sleep. Making yourself observe your skin’s health with kind eyes takes training but the more you do it, the kinder you feel towards your skin. It’s the best kept anti-ageing secret!
